Consider These Midsize Truck Models When Shopping Used
When shopping for a car, it is important to focus on two key areas: your needs and your budget. If you require different things from your vehicle—perhaps it will be a daily driver as well as something that you will use for work—it has to be versatile. This is why pickup trucks are so popular—they have outstanding workhorse capabilities, along with amenities that make them great for everyday usage. This does not mean, however, that you need a big and bulky full-size truck, as there are many fantastic models in the midsize class that balance power and maneuverability. Nor do you have to choose a new pickup; when you look at used trucks for sale, you can get a fantastic vehicle at an affordable price. Let's take a look at five midsize models that are excellent choices for people shopping used.
Chevy Colorado
The Chevy Colorado is currently in its third generation, but models from the second generation (2015-2022) make excellent used trucks. They come with several engine options, but the base is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder that offers 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. For a smaller truck, it has exceptional towing capability, sporting a tow rating of 7,700 lbs when properly equipped. It can also haul up to 1,550 lbs. Two bed sizes are available: 5.1 ft or a 6.2 ft, and both include a locking tailgate.
The base Colorado accommodates two people, but the Extended cab model can seat five. A power-adjustable driver's seat and vinyl upholstery are standard, and upper trims come with cloth or leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable front passenger seat. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two USB ports, and Bluetooth are all standard in the Colorado, as is a user-friendly infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen. Satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, two extra USB ports, and an eight-inch touchscreen can be found in upper trims.
Jeep Gladiator
2020 was an exciting model year for Jeep as the long-awaited Gladiator made its debut. Like all of the other vehicles in their lineup, this truck is eager to tackle tough terrain. All models in this generation, which is currently the first one, come with four-wheel drive, a transfer case, skid plates, and upper trims up the ante with things like front and rear locking differentials and rock rails. A unique feature of this truck is that you can take the doors and top off and even fold down the windshield for some open-air excitement.
Under the hood of the Gladiator is a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Models from 2021 and later add an available 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, providing 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. This truck has excellent towing and hauling ability; it offers a tow rating of 7,650 lbs and a maximum payload of 1,700 pounds. The 5-ft bed has adjustable tie-downs, a power outlet, and a tailgate that can be locked in a halfway-down position.
The Gladiator has room for five people, with a generous amount of head- and legroom in both rows. Cloth upholstery is standard, and upper trims have amenities like heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Standard tech features include an infotainment system with a five-inch touchscreen, two USB ports, an eight-speaker stereo, and Bluetooth. Satellite and HD radio, in-dash navigation, smartphone connectivity, and a forward-facing off-road camera can be found in higher trims.
Nissan Frontier
Another excellent midsize truck to consider is the Nissan Frontier, and the second generation (2005-2021) produced a terrific assortment of models. A standard 3.8-liter V6 that generates 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque is what you'll find under the hood, and this pickup can tow up to 6,720 lbs and haul up to 1,460 lbs. A 6.1 ft bed comes with the King cab, while the Crew cab can be equipped with either that bed or the shorter 5 ft bed.
The King cab accommodates four people, while the Crew cab offers room for one more. The seats are comfortable and supportive and come standard with cloth upholstery. Upper trims have amenities like power-adjustable and heated front seats. Built-in technology includes a four-speaker stereo, USB port, Bluetooth, an available seven-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, keyless entry, and push-button start. Higher trims have a 10-speaker premium sound system, satellite radio, and navigation.
Toyota Tacoma
The third-generation (2016-2022) Tacoma is powered by a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. There is also an optional 3.5-liter V6 that generates 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. This truck can tow up to 6,800 pounds and has a maximum payload of 1,685 lbs. The Access cab comes with a 6 ft bed, and the Double cab can come with that or a 5 ft bed. Both beds have a scratch-resistant bed liner and a bed-rail system with adjustable tie-downs.
The Access cab accommodates four people, while the Double Cab seats five. Cloth upholstery and four-way manually adjustable front seats are standard, and you can find leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated front seats in higher trims. The infotainment system in this pickup is easy to use and is controlled via a seven-inch touchscreen and voice commands. Other standard amenities include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, and three USB ports. Navigation, wireless device charging, and remote keyless entry are some of the features in upper trims. The Tacoma is also built to help keep passengers protected. Every model comes with a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control, and pedestrian detection.
Honda Ridgeline
The Ridgeline is a top midsize truck, and models from earlier in the current second generation (2017-Current) have a powerful engine—a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 280 hp. But its hallmark is its drivability. Built on the same unibody platform as Honda SUVs, this pickup handles like a smaller vehicle, and its excellent suspension ensures a smooth ride. Plus, the standard all-wheel drive provides fantastic traction.
When work needs to be done, the Ridgeline can tow up to 5,000 lbs. It also offers a maximum payload of 1,583 lbs. Every model comes with a 5.3 ft bed, and it has a tailgate with unique features. In addition to folding down, it swings open like a car door. It also includes a compartment underneath the bed floor containing 7.3 cu.ft. of space. Inside the Ridgeline is a roomy cabin that fits five people. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard, and upper trims have heated and power-adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, and a heated steering wheel.
Standard tech features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a seven-speaker stereo, two USB ports, and remote start. The infotainment system is easy to use and has an eight-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add on with things like HD and satellite radio, wireless device charging, an eight-speaker stereo, and navigation. This truck will help keep you safe out on the road, as it comes with forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a lane keeping assist system.
