Highlights of the All-New 2024 Land Cruiser
Drivers looking for a new Land Cruiser for sale have been out of luck recently, as the model was briefly discontinued after the 2021 model year. But for the 2024 model year, the Land Cruiser is not only back, it's better than ever with a fresh new look and a laundry list of new and improved features. This next-generation Land Cruiser gives adventurous drivers everything they’re looking for without sacrificing on-road efficiency and comfort, so you can use it to get to work on the weekdays and let loose on the trails once you’re off the clock.
There are plenty of ways in which the new Land Cruiser is different from the previous generation. It’s smaller, making it easier to maneuver on tight and twisty trails; it’s more fuel efficient, letting you get more miles in between gas station stops; and it’s more affordable, making it accessible to a wider range of drivers. But instead of focusing on what makes this model different from what came before, we want to take a moment to simply appreciate its best features. This new generation of the Land Cruiser is a fantastic vehicle in its own right and doesn’t need to be compared to its predecessor to stand out as a remarkable and rugged SUV.
Capable Powertrain
All trim levels run on the same powertrain, so you don’t need to upgrade to a pricey option in order to get the most powerful engine available. The standard i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain pairs a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor, producing a combined output of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. That power can come in handy just about anywhere, from a highway where you need to accelerate quickly up to the speed of traffic to an open desert where you want to get your thrills to a rocky mountain trail that can only be conquered by a truly rugged vehicle. It also allows the Land Cruiser to tow up to 6,000 lbs. The electric motor doesn’t just boost the Land Cruiser’s overall stats; it also helps you access more torque at lower speeds, which can come in handy when crawling over boulders or maneuvering uphill on twisty trails that can’t be safely traversed at high speeds.
Off-Road Chops Across the Lineup
The entry-level Land Cruiser 1958 trim may be the most affordable trim in the lineup, but it still comes standard with plenty of features that come in handy off-road. On this and every 2024 Land Cruiser, you’ll get a full-time 4WD system with an electronically-controlled two-speed transfer case that lets you switch between high and low ranges for optimal control. Standard center and rear locking differentials ensure that you have enough traction to keep moving forward, even if one of your wheels can’t get a good grip. For protection against sharp rocks, tough roots, and other obstacles, a front skid plate comes standard, shielding the engine, transmission, and transfer case from harm. If you ever end up in a sticky situation, front and rear frame-mounted tow hooks make it easy for another vehicle to lend you a helping hand.
While all trims are ready to leave the pavement behind, upgrading to higher levels gets you even more capability. The middle Land Cruiser trim has a stabilizer disconnect mechanism to help with wheel articulation, for instance, as well as roof rails that let you pack in even more gear. If you’re a pro looking to tackle the toughest of trails, you’ll appreciate the protective rock rails, heavy-duty mudguards, and upgraded skid plates that come standard on the Land Cruiser First Edition.
High-Tech Off-Road Features
While a tough body and comprehensive array of rugged exterior features are crucial for an off-road vehicle, they aren’t the only things that can come in handy on the trails. There are plenty of high-tech features in the Land Cruiser’s interior that can help you traverse rough terrain. Multi-Terrain Select lets you choose between various modes that optimize settings for specific driving situations. Modes include Auto for everyday driving, Dirt for basic off-roading, Sand for desert adventures, Mud for rainy days, Rock for large boulders, and Deep Snow for harsh winter weather.
No matter what kind of terrain you’re tackling, it helps to stay aware of your surroundings. This is easy to do with the Multi-Terrain Monitor, which has selectable front, side, and rear views that let you keep track of all of the obstacles in your path and get a complete picture of the area around you when maneuvering in tight spaces. If you’re in a truly complicated situation, it can help to eliminate all distractions and focus on navigating the trail ahead. That’s where Crawl Control can come in handy. This is basically cruise control designed for low-speed driving on off-road trails. You can choose one of five selectable speeds, then set it and forget it, focusing all of your energy on steering.
Plenty of Comfort & Convenience Features
The Land Cruiser may be best known for its off-road ability, but that doesn’t mean that every feature onboard is focused solely on capability. The interior has plenty of touches that are designed to make it a comfortable space with convenient tech at your fingertips, which can come in handy both on-road and off. Every trim comes standard with three-zone automatic climate control, so you, your front passenger, and those in the back can pick their ideal temperature and stay comfortable no matter the weather. Heated front seats also come standard across the lineup, while all trims other than the base Land Cruiser 1958 have ventilated front seats to help you beat the heat.
All trims come standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to let you use your favorite smartphone apps through the vehicle’s interface. On all trims except the Land Cruiser 1958 (which has an eight-inch touchscreen and seven-inch multi-information display), that interface includes a large 12.3-inch touchscreen that makes it easy to see camera views at a glance and a 12.3-inch customizable digital gauge cluster behind the wheel that puts vital information in an easy-to-see location. To get this info even more directly into your line of sight, you can have it projected onto the lower windshield with the Head-Up Display that comes standard on the First Edition and is available on the middle Land Cruiser trim.
Safety Comes Standard
You and your passengers don’t just need protecting off-road—things can get dangerous on paved roads as well. Thankfully, all trims of the 2024 Land Cruiser come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the latest version of Toyota’s suite of driver assistance features. This includes a variety of features, many of which have been upgraded and enhanced for the latest version of the suite:
- The Pre-Collision System that detects other vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists now senses motorcyclists as well, providing alerts and automatic emergency braking to help you avoid accidents.
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist helps keep you centered in your lane, and now a feature can detect three-dimensional objects like guardrails.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which slows down and speeds back up to match the speed of traffic, now has an extra following distance setting for you to choose from and can track multiple vehicles around you to provide smoother speed changes.
- Lane Tracing Assist keeps you not just centered in your lane but a safe distance from vehicles on either side, whether they’re driving within the lane lines or not.
- Emergency Driving Stop System detects when the driver has become unresponsive and stops the vehicle, so the Land Cruiser won’t keep going if you have a medical emergency behind the wheel.
- Road Sign Assist detects speed limit signs, stop signs, do not enter signs, yield signs, and others and displays them on the Multi-Information Display.
The New Land Cruiser Is Ready for Anything
The 2024 Land Cruiser is as off-road capable as any model that has come before and has plenty of new tricks up its sleeve to help you out on OHV trails. But it’s not a one-trick pony by any stretch of the imagination—it’s also comfortable, safe, and pleasant to drive on city streets, highways, and other paved roads. No matter where you go, you can count on the new and improved Land Cruiser to get you there in style.
