Six Reasons Why So Many People Love the Toyota Tacoma

Seen from below, a red 2023 Toyota Tacoma is parked in an open desert during a sunrise.

For some drivers, the Toyota Tacoma is so popular due to its excellent off-road trims and features, particularly the powerful V6 engine and the presence of a manual transmission. Others love the suite of standard safety features, while other drivers are won-over by its stylish design and impressive tech features. If you have noticed just how many people are looking for a Toyota Tacoma for sale, then you’ll understand why there isn’t just one simple answer to why they find it so irresistible. That fact that it offers so much for so many different types of drivers is, in itself, one of the major reasons so many people keep flocking to it.

While car companies and marketing might use a lot of gimmicks or brag about strange features, once you look past all of that, vehicles remain popular for a long time because they offer things people want in a car, truck, or SUV. The Toyota Tacoma has been the best-selling midsize pickup for nearly two decades here in the US, and there are no signs of that slowing down anytime soon. Once you start looking at some of its remarkable features and options, then it becomes quite clear why so many drivers choose the Tacoma as their midsize favorite.

Reason #1: A Manual Transmission

We’re going to start with this one because it’s truly one of the standout and unique aspects of the Tacoma and one major reason many people choose it. The Toyota Tacoma is one of only two trucks in the US still offered with a manual transmission; the other is the Jeep Gladiator. Since Jeep isn’t exactly known for the same level of reliability and durability in their vehicles as Toyota, it’s no surprise that many people prefer the Tacoma when they want a manual.

Automatic transmissions are great, and one is offered on the Tacoma if that’s what you prefer, but there’s something to be said for the absolute control that a manual transmission provides you with. If you want a midsize truck for going off-road (more on that below), then having a manual transmission is even more attractive since it lets you perfectly control your truck while navigating the trail.

Reason #2: The Available V6 Engine

Don’t get us wrong: the standard 2.7L I-4 engine on the Tacoma is a great choice with 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. We just know that many drivers prefer the available V6 engine on the Tacoma, which boosts its performance up to 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. This certainly makes a difference in terms of your overall driving experience, and we strongly recommend the upgraded engine for all of our customers.

Not only is this engine incredibly fun to drive, and it’s offered with either a manual or automatic transmission, but it also delivers impressive overall capability. With its standard engine, the Tacoma can handle up to 1,685 lbs of payload capacity or up to 3,500 lbs of maximum towing. When you choose the V6 engine, then you lose a bit of payload (it can still handle up to 1,525 lbs when properly configured for it), but you get a midsize truck that can pull up to 6,800 lbs of weight behind it.

Reason #3: The TRD Off-Road Trims

Midsize trucks have become incredibly popular options for going off-road due in large part to models like the Toyota Tacoma and its numerous TRD off-road trims. You have several to choose from, including the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro. Standard Tacoma models come with all-season tires, while the TRD Pro features all-terrain tires designed to let you tackle any trail or dirt road.

Every Tacoma has more than nine inches of ground clearance, which is perfect for navigating obstacles while off-road, but the TRD Off-Road trim has a 32-degree approach angle, 23-degree departure angle, and 24-degree breakover angle. If you go for the TRD Pro, then you get a 36.4-degree approach angle, 24.7-degree departure angle, and 26.6-degree breakover angle for improved maneuverability on the trail. You get skid plates for the engine and front suspension on every Tacoma, but the TRD Pro features a strong front skid plate and a Multi-Terrain Monitor with a special camera to give you a better view of terrain while going off-road.

Reason #4: Stylish Exterior Packages

We’re not going to say that looks are everything when it comes to a great midsize truck, but we’re also not going to deny that everyone loves a pickup that looks stunning. While the default trims of the Tacoma already look amazing, the 2023 model and its SR5 trim have two gorgeous aesthetic packages available. The first is the SX Package: it features 16-inch black wheels, an exclusive bed graphic, black over-fenders, and black badging across the exterior for a unique look. If you’re interested in a different sort of appearance, then the SR5 Chrome Package features 18-inch chrome-finished alloy wheels, exterior chrome accents on the door handles and exhaust tips, and a leather-wrapped shift knob inside that complements its overall aesthetic.

Reason #5: Fantastic Standard Safety

It’s easy to focus on things like off-road performance or impressive towing capability when looking at a truck like the Tacoma and ignore everything else. No matter what kind of vehicle you’re looking at, however, nothing is more important than how well it can help keep you and your loved ones safe. The Tacoma features some of the best standard safety features on the road, thanks to the Toyota Safety Sense P package that comes standard on every model.

This package includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, which can alert you to the potential for a crash and help you avoid it. You also get a Lane Departure Alert to warn you if you seem to be drifting from your lane, along with Automatic High Beams that shut off to avoid blinding oncoming drivers and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to make your daily drive less stressful. Additional available safety features include a Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Rear Parking assist sonar if you want to take safety even further.

Reason #6: Bold Technology Throughout

Between its standard and available features, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma has some of the most impressive tech features out there. Every model comes with a 4.2-inch color display in the dashboard cluster, and while a seven-inch infotainment display is standard, most models come with an eight-inch infotainment screen. High-trim models, like the TRD Pro, also come with a JBL sound system with a subwoofer and amplifier for a fantastic audio experience while on (or off) the road. Bringing all of this together creates a midsize truck that is fun to drive, and that feels like the perfect expression of modern automotive innovation.

Come See the Tacoma for Yourself

At the end of the day, no matter what we say about the Toyota Tacoma, words on a screen fail to do justice to this fantastic truck. You really need to see the Tacoma for yourself and experience everything it has to offer to fully appreciate just how impressive and unique it is. Whether you’re drawn to its manual transmission and powerful V6 engine or you’re looking for a pickup to take off-road, the Tacoma has you covered. Once you drive it for yourself and feel what it brings to the road, you’ll understand why so many other drivers have chosen the Tacoma as their favorite midsize truck.
